Orchestral Keyboard Project

This document is a bibliography of concert orchestral works with keyboard parts (piano, celeste, and synthesizer), and was my dissertation, completed in 2010. I am sharing it in the hopes that it can be a useful reference for other orchestral pianists. At the time of writing, I was the Principal Pianist for the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and spending my summers as an Orchestral Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival. I created this project to answer my own questions about the repertoire that I wished were readily available:

  • Will I be doubling (or, on occasion, tripling!) on multiple instruments, or is more than one keyboardist needed?

  • How many versions of this piece are there (hello Stravinsky and Copland ballets) and how do their keyboard needs differ?

  • How hard should I hit the panic button when gauging my practice load for a certain part?

I did impose some limitations to keep this paper at a manageable size. Only works written before 2000 were included, and of those, only those that were performed by American orchestras between 2000-2008. So, this document is a now a bit dated (notably missing is the Harry Potter Suite, which was written in 2001), but it is still a good resource for standard orchestral repertoire. I would happily welcome feedback and comments, so feel free to reach out! I would also entertain the idea of eventually updating this project should there seem to be a need and enough interest, as I enjoy nerdy bibliographical research!
